i shorted out my fuel gauge on my harley davidson

⚠️ Fuel Gauge Shorted Out – What to Check
1. Check the Fuse
- Start with the fuse box — most Harley-Davidsons have a fuse labeled “Instruments” or “Gauges.”
- If it’s blown, replace it with the same amp rating (usually 15A or 20A).
2. Inspect the Wiring
- Look for melted, frayed, or exposed wires around the fuel gauge, tank, and connector plugs.
- Common short point: where wires pass under the tank or near the gauge housing.
3. Check the Fuel Sending Unit
- If the short reached the fuel sending unit (inside the tank), it might have been damaged.
- Use a multimeter to test its resistance — it should change when the float moves.
4. Test the Fuel Gauge
- With ignition on, disconnect the sender wire and ground it.
- If the gauge moves to full, it's likely fine and the sender is the issue.
- If not, the gauge may be fried and needs replacing.
5. Replace Faulty Parts
- Blown fuse only? Easy fix.
- Damaged gauge or sender? Replace with OEM or aftermarket unit.
- Reconnect everything properly — no pinched wires or bare terminals!
⚠️ Tip: Add a fuse inline if one wasn’t protecting the circuit before — it’ll save you next time.
